Hey, it’s Emmet. I guess I already said I’m a Biomedical Engineering PhD student studying immune cell biophysics (repeating in case you forgot). If you just want to see a CV, click here.

Otherwise, here’s a bit about my life so far. I grew up in Martinez, CA as a PK (Pastor’s kid) in a non-denominational Christian church, read the bible a few times in my early life, but have to admit I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the Redwall books or Harry Potter books… I grew up wanting to either be a pastor (my dad’s dad was a pastor as well, so it’s in the family) or a fantasy writer, the latter of which held its appeal for longer. In high school, I slowly realized / admitted to myself that I loved math, and was endlessly intrigued by biology and physics.

Fast-forward to college at UC Davis, I majored in Biomedical Engineering and participated in some exciting research in the Heinrich Lab (described on my research page). I also had a blast playing tenor sax in the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! and met the love of my life, Katie Griffin (that’s in chronological order, not order of importance). Katie and I sat next to each other in chemistry and biology, which is obviously the ideal atmosphere for a budding romance. We’re now married, and she is in the DVM/PhD program at UC Davis (in the midst of her immunology PhD currently, check out her Twitter to keep up with her!) and I’m working on my PhD in Biomedical Engineering, still over in the Heinrich Lab. We both hope to stay in academia (please email me with advice on the two-body problem), and we’re both weird nerds who love science. We also have a wonderful cat named Milo, check him out on Instagram.

The best is yet to come!
