Emmet Francis Music

Music has been an important part of my life since kindergarten, when my mom started teaching me to play piano (her mom, who studied music in college, taught her!). In junior high and high school, I played in and eventually led our youth group worship band. We eventually even started playing some of my original songs! I also played bass clarinet in concert band through both junior high and high school, and sprinkled in some tenor sax for marching band in high school. Throughout my high school years, I also played piano for 3 school musicals and accompanied our community chorus for a year. And throughout college, I played tenor sax in the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh!

So, needless to say, I love playing music. Perhaps the most powerful musical experiences for me have been writing songs on guitar or piano (usually with some words as well). Not sure how many of them have been any good, but I certainly love expressing myself in this way. Early on, I wrote worship songs, and while I don’t really relate to them any more, it was a great starting point. Words or no words, music has the power to ask questions and somehow provide, if not an answer, then a peace in unknowing. Over the past several years, I’ve continued to work on writing songs about the great mysteries of life: love, uncertainty, answers to unasked questions, and existence itself. I intend to continue using music to process my experience and exploration of what life is and where we can find meaning.
